The Rainforests of Costa Rica Photo Workshop

December 6–12, 2026

The Rainforests of Costa Rica Photo Workshop is an immersive, small-group photography experience designed to help you observe and master techniques specific to the challenges of tropical rainforest photography. Led by Roy Toft, this workshop is suitable for photographers of all skill levels, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced professionals.

Important Travel Note

Participants must arrive in San José, Costa Rica on December 5, 2026. An overnight stay in San José is required, as the group departs early on the morning of December 6 for a short domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez, followed by 4WD ground transport to Bosque del Cabo Rainforest Lodge.

The workshop officially begins on December 6 and concludes on December 11 at the end of the day. Participants will depart Bosque del Cabo early on the morning of December 12 for return transport to Puerto Jiménez and a short flight back to San José.

Location

This workshop takes place at the breathtaking Bosque del Cabo Rainforest Lodge, a 750+ acre private rainforest reserve perched atop ocean cliffs at Cabo Matapalo, at the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula. With private bungalows overlooking the Pacific Ocean and rainforest canopy, Bosque del Cabo offers a rare combination of comfort, seclusion, and extraordinary photographic access.

Wildlife and Photography Opportunities

During daylight hours, participants will have exceptional opportunities to photograph a wide range of wildlife, including all four species of Costa Rican monkeys:

  • Mantled Howler

  • White-Faced Capuchin

  • Spider Monkey

  • Endangered Squirrel Monkey

Birdlife is abundant and includes toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, tanagers, and the endangered Scarlet Macaw. Other possible wildlife encounters include sloths, tamanduas, coatis, kinkajous, collared peccaries, Golfo Dulce poison dart frogs, sea turtles, and possibly even puma.

Evening Programs

Evenings feature instructional sessions covering a variety of photographic topics, as well as a special behind-the-scenes presentation on the creation of Roy Toft’s coffee table book, Osa: Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea.

Why the Osa Peninsula

Bosque del Cabo showcases the remarkable biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula, one of Costa Rica’s most remote and biologically significant regions. This area is widely regarded as one of the most vital and thriving ecosystems in all of Central America.

Workshop Highlights

  • Macro photography techniques for subjects such as leaf-cutter ants and red-eyed tree frogs

  • Morning sea turtle release

  • Expert instruction in both on-camera flash and off-camera fill flash

  • Wildlife photography opportunities morning, midday, and night

  • Extended access to all four monkey species and a rich variety of birds and mammals
